Go /p/ro:
• Please post images that are JPG format and ideally smaller than 1 MB, and/or about 1000 pixels on the longest side.
• Expect to be judged harshly. Learn to deal with it.

Want:
• We come here for photos, so post yours as often as possible, even if "image unrelated" to your text.
• "Flickr/500px/Tumblr/Facebook/Portfolio" threads are for critique and networking.
• Use "Recent Photos" threads if you are shy or only want to post a couple of photos.
• Shared raw files which we can collectively edit for discussion of post-processing techniques, are encouraged.
• Use the Catalog to consolidate similar topics (photographic themes, images or technical gear threads).

Do not want:
• Go to /wsr/ or /r/ for specific Photoshop requests.
• Gear threads are discouraged, but identified as necessary. Many users simply hide these threads.

>pic related

Got it in 2004 for my birthday. Dad spent $400 on this sucker plus the 256-512MB memory cards. It was awesome with the 4x optical zoom and fit in the back seat compartment of my motorcycle so I took it everywhere and got some great pictures. Sensor died not even three years later so my only complaint.

I’ll have to grab a few shots from my computer later, but looking back at some of the pics I’m still impressed with the quality of this little guy. They sometimes have that “DSLR” look instead of the processed iPhone camera look.

No matter what I do, I can't get my Nikon Z6 II to capture a sharp photo.
Pinpoint AF, tripod, shutter delay, changing apertures, whatever. Even tethering and going completely hands off. Doesn't matter what I do or how I do it, everything always inevitably looks like shit down at the 1:1 pixel level. There's always a soft blur. Not a single point in the frame is ever truly sharp.

This is a problem because I got this thing with the intent to digitize a bunch of stuff including some pretty big originals (too big to fit in a flatbed scanner) where I want to keep fine detail with 1:1 framing, no zooming in for separate "detail" shots. I set a goal for the ability to frame something 19x13 and get a sharp quality 300 DPI, but this isn't cutting it. At all. I don't know if it's my lens (NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8) or if it's my sensor not having enough resolution. Maybe the AA filter is ruining my fine details? or maybe advertised resolution itself is a scam when behind a bayer sensor?

I only care about such fine details in situations where the camera will be mounted and capturing still subjects.
Would a camera without an AA filter do better?
Should I get a 45MP Nikon or a 61MP Sony?
Would pixel shift likely solve all my problems?

Z6 II doesn't have such a mode.
>>4310422
f/4 is what yields max sharpness, at the center of the frame, which isn't crisp even there.
Here's a 100% from f/4 in a flat perspective. Not a single point in the frame anywhere in it is close to being tack sharp.

>>4310416
Maybe. This is the only lens I have though and it is supposed to be great according to all review sites.

>>4310421
>focus in front of subject
>focus shift shoot a few hundred frames at smallest step increment with e-shutter mode on, VR off
>cherry pick "sharpest" image from the bunch based on the center
>still not actually sharp
I would like to blame me but I can't imagine a way to try and squeeze more out of the gear. I'm not missing focus on moving subjects I'm trying to tripod shoot non-moving stuff in ideal conditions.

>The more I look into this shit it seems like everyone saying bayer offers anywhere near its advertised resolution is on some serious copium
Yeah, digital color photography is inherently algorithmic and approximate, hence why I think digital purists are kinda retarded. With Bayer, your color resolution is 1/4 of your photosite count. If you want to view your scene at a certain size but are not happy with the sensor quality, use a higher megapixel one and downsample to the same size. The more you downsample, the less approximate it gets.

To clarify the size thing, a higher megapixel sensor will have higher per-pixel noise since each pixel is smaller. Thus, it may actually look worse at a per-pixel level though obviously that will be more "zoomed in" compared to the 100% view on a lower megapixel sensor. Where you do see benefits however, is when viewing at the same picture size since the higher megapixel sensor will be sampling that image more finely.

>The more I look into this shit it seems like everyone saying bayer offers anywhere near its advertised resolution is on some serious copium. On the other hand it seems like even people pointing out it isn't perfect also can't get their facts right. For example the site here says removing a bayer filter and shooting monochrome turns a 20MP EOS 6D into 80MP, but that should be impossible, in theory that could only make it a "real" 20MP.
You're right, that's not how it works. 20MP is 20MP. Removing the CFA does make each pixel a whole lot more sensitive though, since it's no longer exposed to just one color.
>>
>>4310433
>Not a single point in the frame anywhere in it is close to being tack sharp.
Looks pretty dern fine to me, chief, considering you're taking a picture of a US dollar bill which is mass produced ink on fabric and isn't gonna be perfectly sharp anywhere itself.

People just have no idea what ISO actually does, and why their images are noisy in the first place.

If you don't know, here's the simple trick. If iso makes your image noisey, you didn't have enough light in the first place. All you have to do is get enough light so that you don't have any crushed blacks in your subject, and then turn iso up to get the level of exposure you want. 50 iso is for film l. There are no sensors with 50 iso as baseline. They are all 100. If your camera has <100 iso as a setting, it is a oost processing trick.

Leicafags are an interesting species.
This is a thread to try and comprehend the minds of these consumerist retards.
Their subreddit, the premier place for Leica fans, has a rule explicitly stating that any photos need to "demonstrate a skill or technique that is incredibly difficult to execute correctly, has not been seen before, or both"
All the photos in the subreddit do not fit this idiotic criteria, yet are lauded.
99% of the posts there are about people buying gear instead of photos.
They care more about being seen with a Leica than actually using it.

Seems we don't got one right now, so I will start.

Pic related - it's from my LX100. I've heard that she is kinda prone to sensor dust, but is this actually sensor dust? Or an error on the Sensor?

There used to be two dots but I was able to eliminate one with the "vacuum cleaner trick" - cut out the bottom of a 0,5l bottle and put it over the extended lense. Then suck away.

Worked already two times for me, but not with this fucker.

i know how it works, my question is why or how are people obsessing over battery life when:

1. they have more than one most of the time
2. they weigh nothing
3. swapping them takes no time
4. as you said, when using it correctly, it lasts very long

so what is their problem
>>
>>4310103
if you like to leave your camera on all the time and just rely on the power saving time out, or you like to not charge your camera for weeks and weeks, yes battery life will suck
you can easily get 1000-1500 shots under normal shooting conditions and simply turning the camera off when not actively using it
you can keep it topped off through usb charging when taking breaks too
2 batteries should cover a full day of shooting for like 99% of people

That's like asking why people have literal angry meltdowns over video features that are not relevant and have literally no visible benefit unless you work for a netflix original series, or your hobby is pausing and zooming in

Because they enjoy it. That's why. It helps them feel good about their purchase, or their desire to make another purchase.

I kept the same battery in a z6 going for ~8 hours and what finally killed it and required a swap was a 15 minute video, its a nothingburger

>that guy, and we all run into that guy, who randomly starts saying your camera is shit and you should have bought a canon r5 because all of its good points are essential and all of its flaws are irrelevant and user error for even caring about them
Fuck those guys
Yes its literally the same thing with battery life wank, just more money cope. if cameras were free you wouldn't see 1% as much.

Is there any advantage to using CF cards over SD cards in a camera that accepts both? I am not trying to rapid fire 30 successive shots of birds in flight or anything like that.

Have you all actually tried these lenses? They're pretty cool.

Use them in my Olympus om1 it’s part of getting that look from that era.
Using my modern Nikon primes on the f100 produces something that looks halfway between film and digital.
I much prefer film with these older style lenses.

Not particularly, but Zeiss has a certain niche, and a lens doesn't have to be Zeiss-like to be good

Yes, but they'll adapt rather easily to modern mirrorless (DSLRs are S.O.L. though, since the back element gets in the mirror's way). The Takumar 50s are also known for their heavy flaring when wide open. Pic related is f/1.4.

>work a day job, not much time outside of weekends to take photos
>want to shoot more
>started carrying my camera with me on all times, on commutes, on walks, on errands, etc.
>taking lots of great photos, able to recognize and react to moments as they develop
>thisisgreat.jpg

>over time, feeling like quality is starting to drop off
>commutes are the same, not much new to see
>I'm too busy looking for photos on my days off to really engage with people around me/with me
>my photography has become much more passive, don't really have any active thoughts around what photo I want to look for
>now all of my photos feel like I didn't "earn" them because I didn't plan them out

I know it's because of photo fatigue, but the idea of not having my camera and missing a good moment kills me. How do you guys (suggest to) go about this/have you had this happen to you?

I usually have a personal project on the side to keep my mind focused and give me a sense of direction, but I don't have any going on currently.

Quantity does not equal quality. Photography is just the degenerated form of cinema. You can take a million photos and they can only hope to be good if they all work towards the theme.

Photographers almost noticed this with winogrand, who took photos so often it was like a random selection of frames from a movie, but they missed the point entirely.

Try to meet people you care about in places you like with your camera. Don't plan anything in particular. If the moment is right, you won't resist snapping a few pictures.

Much less on me, I carry a camera in hand most places I go (cellphone)

I have a gr iii as a backup camera. You can take that thing anywhere and I do.

Bought it 'open box, like new' 4 years ago thinking I probably overpaid and looking at the prices now it's actually appreciated in the value. Lol.

Thanks YouTube!

After buying 4 prime lenses, then playing around with some old lenses
I have realized one thing:
>the lenses don't really matter
>crap lens look good because they're crap >therefore more realistic
>ultra sharp lenses look digital and unreal
>it's the artifacts that makes it cinematic
>the film cameras have layers upon layers of mat box filters and lens "scent" glasses to achieve an airy cinematic look

Some photography requires sharpness and some doesn't.

I still shoot a lot of film where the contrasting nature of some of the newer lenses just doesn't play well with cheaper film stocks. There vintage is King.

But I also do a lot of night photography out in the moon light mountains sand there anything that's not a Sony g master turns to mush. For example I don't have a very sharp wide angle and always have to sharpen the one I've got in post.

I've also needed sharp lenses the few time I did product work and for digitizing my film.

Seeing the difference between lenses and art until itself. Even lenses from the '60s are sharp enough in the center so slap them onto an aps-c camera and not worry about it too much. It's on edge cases where you begin to see the difference.

Lmfao look at this retard
>AND IT HAD TO BE A SILVER BOX OR YOUR PHOTOS LOOK BAD!
Film cultists are the gearfag twat everyone assumes FF digital with sharp lenses peeps are, but they really arent and most of them use shittier cameras

Silver box?
Some good Kodak film through a 1970s film camera is the peak of image making.

You sound like the type of person who eats frozen ketchup popsicles while wearing white gloves.
>>
>>4308790
thank you for the insights
is the digital sharpened image noticeable in a double blind test against the ultra sharp g master?
>>
>>4309849
Kind of if you use the inbuilt sharpening in Lightroom, it's getting much better though. Some of the newer programs really do give amazing results .

I will say the same thing for blur. It doesn't do much if the background is sharp to begin with but turning a f2.8 portrait into an f1.4 is doable.

What it can't really do is make up for a blurry image because you didn't bring a tripod with you. With some of the new gmasters that you can practically shoot in the dark.
