Does random doodling, in your opinion, improve your drawing skills to any significant degree? You're not practicing strict observation, precise lines, correct proportions, difficult perspective, rendering, or anything that seems to approach true learning. If you're out at a restaurant somewhere, is it worth taking out your sketchbook and doodling the people you see around you, or is that just a meme from the Disney days?
>>7156284A significant degree? No. But keeping up the daily motor skills, even if you aren't striving towards improvement, will only help you keep the routine of art, which isn't bad. But doodling too much, like without focus, direction, observation, etc., can be stagnating. You'll end up with Chris Chan art.
>is it worth taking out your sketchbook and doodling the people you see around youyeah, that's still improves your observation and visual library
>>7156284are you stupid? Drawing people your see around you in real life is studying
>>7156339it's not precise. you're only getting a glance.if you think that's enough to truly study a subject, you must not be good at drawing
I'm going to be honest. I care DEEPLY about social media engagement when it comes to my art. As far as I'm concerned, if my work doesn't get enough likes, it's bad art.Yes, I draw for cloutYes, I draw for followersYes, I draw for approval and validationWhy the fuck else would I even bother posting anything online?
>>7155343Based
>>7155344You'd still care about numbers, they would just have a different name.
>>7155343I draw for my own self-satisfaction, rather than anything deep like 'communication'. I don't see it as being any better or worse than your reasoning honestly, it's not noble or anything.
>>7155343i just want to make friends honestly. i’d rather have 5 followers who all draw as well and talk to me about my ocs (while having interesting ocs of their own) than 1 million followers who i don’t even know. that’s my motivation for art personally, to communicate in ways i can’t with words or to otherwise supplement my lack of charisma. i don’t mean to imply i have some deep shit inside of me either, i just want to draw traps in artsy ways
>>7156031>enufffor what though? how is that a real issue vs chasing clout/likes?

>>7154615https://files.catbox.moe/w24dji.pngCame back and fixed some proportion errors. Honestly I think I'm gonna call it quits and say I had a good practice run with this piece. I need to move on and do more perspective and urban setting practice.
https://files.catbox.moe/5llo07.jpegRendering pink skin is pretty weird. You can’t move to red colors when it’s time to draw shadows. Feels like it’s impossible to not make it look muddy
>>7155841To be sincere, I know next to nothing regarding color theory (much less about digital painting), but, from what I can gather, when applying three-tone shading to an opaque surface, the latter's color palette (values aside) would be mainly influenced by three factors: the base hue, the color of the lightsource, and the predominant hue of the surrounding environment. On this subject, the Youtube videos by artist Marco Bucci have been extremely helpful in giving me a new awareness of the different properties of color, as well as of the manner in which they simultaneously interact with both light and shadow:https://youtu.be/kYtGh2xTAlghttps://youtu.be/gwLQ0cDb4cERoughly summarizing the content of the few videos that I have watched so far, in order to establish a three-tone color palette for a character's skin, you should start by determining its base hue (i.e., that of the halftone areas), and then proceed to select the color of your lightsource. After that, with respect to the color of the highlights, it would have to be a somewhat intermediate/transitional hue between the base one and that of the lightsource. If, for example, you were to pick a yellow hue for the latter, depending on its intensity, the color options for the highlights on Beelzebub's skin could go from a reddish pink to an orangey yellow.Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>7156247>>7155841I forgot the mention that there's also the alternative of color-picking highligths and shadows directly from references, and then making adjustments to the hues and values according to your personal taste. For example, in the case of Beelzebub, you could use scans of the original colored illustrations by Toriyama, screenshots from either the game or the anime, or even photographs of figurines.
>>7156305>Toriyama coloringI don't recommend it. Most mangakas in general suck at this
When I normally draw, I get something like the left. The vertical line looks almost perfectly vertical to me. But as soon as I flip my canvas, the vertical line looks ridiculously tilted like the right.I'm assuming to most anons looking at this, both faces' vertical construction lines have the same tilt angle. So is it just because my actual eyes aren't centered properly? One of my eyes might be a bit higher than the other, does this mean my art is always going to be fucked? Or do I just lack practice?
>>7155122>semantic memory impairment>there is selective loss of semantic memory, characterized by preservation of superordinate knowledge of words, and objects, but loss of finer-grained informationchrist this describes me to a t.but the image says "conceptual deficit" for c and d which are tilted like mine. which is it?
>>7154211funny enough symmetric poses are the most boring imho
>>7155225whats also interesting is that analog clocks are going by the wayside since all phones have digital clocks in them, and so people are talking about what to do if this becomes a no longer viable test due to cultural shifts.
>>7154211Try placing a true vertical line in the center of the page before you start drawing as a reference point for your eyes to compare your lines to. You can use a ruler for it. It's not "cheating" because it isn't actually part of any drawing, just a visual anchor point.
>>7156314>It's not cheatingThank you, this is a concept that I need to hammer into my head. I'm not a superhuman, and even if some people can do perfect symmetry, I'm not one of them. And even if it were cheating, I'd cheat. I want to draw! Simple as.

>>7156162>First, congratulations again man. You really did it. But why is it time sensitive? Is it just the publisher trying to create some kind of FOMO? Seems like such an odd thing to limit since it's standard visual media you read as opposed to, say, a Fortnite/Call of Duty skin or the like.I don't know, but if I had to guess it's because it stems from magazines being the FOMO early-bird version while the tankoubon are the permanent release for people can wait

And after this accidental leak we had another chapter that shows Tonkers was addicted to smoking. We can't help but to infer that this is due to him trying to distract himself from the memory of what he had done. However, Tub catches him smoking but the ever quick thinking Tonkers played it off as if the cigarrettes were just candy cigarretes.Had the leak never happened, even we might have been fooled, but now we know that Tonker's leisurely demeanor is just a facade.

Back again with an hour long drawing. I always loved the jungle dinosaur and cave man pulp ideas. I also am not a fan of the current obsession with feathers on every dinosaur. I much prefer the more reptilian form for large dinosaurs. I even enjoy drawing many theropods having crocodilian lile scutes on their necks as a way to protect themselves from other theropods and aggressive mates.
>>7155267One thing i forgot to mention and would like to improve is the texture of my drawings i do not like how muddy my shading is, but im not sure i completely a fan of cell shading and similar styles either. I like how manga ink work looks but that is just a genteral statement as i dont have an exact style in mind. Not to mention that there are plenty of incredible greyscale inked western works. I suppose we shall see.
This was a very quick 30 minute sketch. It is not great in its executions, as i dont know how to draw cute girls. But i do like the composition and the lighting well enough. Another hope of mine is to draw the female form with ease and without a need for ecxessive adjustments in order for the form to be usable
>>7156310Id also would like to add that the idea of this is Anon's girl is waiting for his call. Hes busy making it, but his girl is all alone missing him.

>>7155890JUST PUT OUT SOME TPBS OR GRAPHIC NOVELS. JUST HAVE ORGANIZED COLLECTIONS. JUST BUNDLE NEW STORIES IN A MAGAZINE! JUST DO WHAT THE JAPANESE DO. THE BUSINESS MODEL IS RIGHT THERE!!! YOU DON'T HAVE TO INVENT ANYTHING NEW. JUST RIP OFF THE JAPANESE! WHY IS THIS SO COMPLICATED!?!?AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...
>>7156267>JUST RIP OFF THE JAPANESE!Shonen Jump puts out a new magazine every week, which costs $1 at most, is available at nearly every convenience store in the country (unlike our specialized, expensive comic shops), and are each 150+ pages. You get access to the newest chapter of your favorite stories, and you also discover new series that you would've never heard of. In America, each series is published in an individual leaflet. If you want to discover a new series, you need to risk $5 on something totally unknown, and may be of questionable quality. It's very very hard to discover new things in the way the current American comic model is set up. This is probably why Webtoons is so popular. It's not because it's on your phone, or because it costs less (it doesn't. their paywall is very steep) It's because it's very very easy to find new series.Finding new creators and stories is the surest path towards the health of the comic book industry. We need to make that easier.
>>7156276>Shonen Jump puts out a new magazine every week, which costs $1 at mostNo need to even do that, just make the current floppies $1 and distribute them to more places than fucking speciality stores. And for god's sakes, make the comics for kids! Why they thought catering only to adults and leaving kids by the wayside was a smart idea is far beyond me. Who was supposed to grow up as a comic fan if they didn't have comics to read as child because they were all violent and 'mature'.Do you know what currently the most popular, and financially successful, western comics currently are? Kids comics. Hell, just do ANYTHING other than what they're currently doing. The leaders of these comic companies are genuinely the most incompetent business leaders there have ever been. There is likely never been a case of a business fumbling a golden opportunity (the movie fad) so hard and for so long. How they didn't capitalise on that situation in the slightest is genuinely astounding. Business students will be taught this in the future and say out loud 'what the fuck were those retards doing!?', like I am right now!.
>>7156298I agree with what you're saying, but I just feel like the change needed is too big. We're talking about remodelling the entire infrastructure of the comics industry.Faster to just learn Japanese and publish my manga that way, desu
